Alachua County and South Florida are participating in a global iNaturalist City Nature Challenge, April 24-27, 2020, and you can help put our communities on the map!
What is a bioblitz?
A BioBlitz, also written without capitals as bioblitz, is an intense period of biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living species within a designated area. Groups of scientists, naturalists and volunteers conduct an intensive field study over a continuous time period (e.g., usually 24 hours).
How do you participate?
Mark your calendar and get outside and document all the plants and animals you can find in your yard and post them to iNaturalist April 24-27:
- Download the iNaturalist app and create an account
- Take pictures of plants and animals in your yard and neighborhood (make sure your geo locater is on so it records that the photo was taken in Alachua County or South Florida)
- Post to iNaturalist
The information you post will help record the amazing biodiversity in your area and iNaturalist even helps one identify the plants and animals that you post.
- Get the free app through your device, https://citynaturechallenge.org/participate/
- Ask questions of wildlife ecology state specialist Mark Hostetler
- See the Alachua County iNaturalist site
- See the South Florida iNaturalist site
If you live outside the South Florida or Alachua County areas, you can still participate! It just won’t count towards the challenge but will be important in helping us know what you plants and animals you are seeing!
