In celebration of the University of Florida Homecoming weekend, the UF/IFAS College of Agricultural and Life Sciences the CALS Council hosted the second annual CALS Homecoming Shoebox Parade. CALS is home to many students, faculty, staff, organizations, departments, and research centers that truly embody “The Heart of the Gator Nation.” This shoebox parade took its own spin on participating in UF’s time-honored homecoming traditions.
In addition to being a creative way for those involved in CALS and friends of CALS to showcase their hand-crafted creations and highlight their department, center, or organization, this event benefitted the Alan and Cathy Hitchcock Field and Fork Pantry. A donation of $10 or 4 or more jars of peanut butter served as an entry fee to participate in the parade. The Field and Fork Pantry is a free resource for University of Florida students that seeks to tackle food insecurity on campus.
Entries to the parade were just as diverse as the people, places, and opportunities in CALS. While suggested construction materials included pipe cleaners, action figures, or foil, float constructors went above and beyond. Floats included everything from modeling clay to live mosquito larvae! Why, you might ask? Participants had their eye on the prize!
All entries were shared on @UFCALS social media where winners will be chosen based on the tabulation of likes or reactions on each float’s photo. Voting opened October 8, 2021, and will close at 11:59 p.m. on October 14, 2021. Best of luck to all the participants! Be sure to check out the parade and place your votes on social media by the time voting closes.
