Broward County Tree Trimmer License
The Broward County tree trimmer licensing program dates back to October 2000 when the Broward County Board of County Commissioners passed an ordinance regulating the county’s tree trimming industry. This action was taken to improve the quality of trimming in the county and protect the health, safety and welfare of the public.
Florida Legislature Changes Licensing Laws
Three years ago, the Florida Legislature voted to remove license requirements for certain businesses. The Broward County Tree Trimmer License fell under that category.
Since then, Senate Bill 1142 has extended the licensing requirements until June 30, 2025.
What will happen with Tree Trimmer Licenses after June 30, 2025?
Beginning July 1, 2025, local governments can no longer require a tree trimmer license. However, cities across the state can still require training, such as ISA Certified Arborist, or the UF/IFAS Extension Tree Trimmer Certification. Importantly, tree trimmers are still required to follow ANSI A300 (American National Standards Institute guidelines for pruning) Tree trimmers that do not follow these standards can still be cited for tree abuse. Broward County and many cities will continue to enforce tree abuse performed by tree trimming companies.
Licenses still required until July 1, 2025 in Broward County
Commercial tree trimmers needing to renew their license before July 1, 2025, will still be required to take the UF/IFAS Broward County Tree Trimmer Certification class, and pass the exam. They can then apply for the license with Broward County.
After July 1, 2025, a Broward County License will no longer be required, but the tree trimmer certification training may be required, and/or an ISA Certified Arborist Certification, depending on the city you live in.
There is also a new Prescription Pruning Qualification (PPQ) offered to ISA Certified Arborists, which is an additional certification for pruning.
Tree Trimmer Certification Classes
The Certification Training that UF/IFAS Broward Extension provides is a 4-hour course that focuses on proper pruning according to the ANSI A300. Some of the topics cover goals of pruning, recognizing tree abuse, correcting structural defects in trees and more. The class is offered in English, Spanish and Creole, and open to professionals and homeowners. Upon successful completion of this training, you will receive a training card that is valid for 2 years.
