Chloe Cole is a member of the UF Animal Sciences class of 2026 and this summer she completed an 8-week internship with Alliance Dairies in Trenton, Florida. During her time there, Chloe worked hands-on with the dairy cows and calves in the maternity, breeding, and hospital departments.
Maternity
At the maternity department, Chloe learned about neonatal calf care including tube feeding, vaccination, and ear tagging. She observed different stages of parturition and post-cow management/care.
Breeding
At the breeding department, Chloe learned different synchronization protocols, how to properly palpate for pregnancy diagnosis, the basics of ultrasounds, heat detection, and how to artificially inseminate.
Hospital
At the hospital, Chloe would assist in diagnosing and treating common dairy cattle diseases, perform a physical exam on a cow, collect sterile milk samples, and give medications when needed (all with the supervision of a veterinarian)!
Chloe says her internship allowed her to directly apply her reproduction classroom knowledge to real-world situations.
One of her favorite parts of this internship was meeting new people from various cultures and locations, as well as learning firsthand how broad the dairy industry is. She is excited about the new connections she was able to make because of this experience.
Her advice to peers considering an internship is, “If the opportunity comes, take it! Any internship can be super helpful even if it’s not necessarily in the field you want to work in. I have never thought of working in the dairy industry but it was the only industry I had no prior experience with, so I wanted to learn more about it and I am so happy that I did!”
