Got goats? St. Johns County 4-H does!
Hooves & Horns 4-H Club leader, Cathy Brewster, has taken big strides in re-establishing the goat project in St. Johns County. After months of planning, the show was held this past Saturday, February 25th, at the St. Johns County Equestrian Center. Over one hundred and twenty-five people were in attendance, thirty-five of which were exhibitors. Exhibitors were made up of members from the Hooves and Horns 4-H Club, Oakleaf FFA, and the Clay County Agventures 4-H Club. The show consisted of a skill-a-thon, showmanship competition, and costume contest.
During the skill-a-thon, participants tested their knowledge on all things goat! This included topics such as nutrition, anatomy, equipment, and grooming. The showmanship competition gave participants an opportunity to show off their handling skills and present their goat to an official judge. The last part of the show allowed participants to get in touch with their creative side during a costume contest.
Contestants walked away from the show with improved skills in goat handling, knowledge, and most importantly, a big smile! With the success of this year’s show, we are hopeful that St. Johns County will host a goat show for many years to come.
