Aquaponics is the practice of combining fish farming and hydroponics. It can provide opportunities for small farm producers targeting local markets and agritourism opportunities or simply backyard aquaponics as a hobby. Tilapia is one of the most common aquacultured fish due to its tolerance of a wide range of water quality conditions. High-value vegetable crops that are commonly grown in hydroponic systems such as tomato, cucumber, pepper, lettuce, and mixed herbs are recommended for successful aquaponic production (Tyson et al. 2013).

Join Pinellas County Extension for an introductory workshop on aquaponics and learn how fish farming and hydroponics work together to create sustainable farming.
