It just got easier to figure out if those fresh, frozen or prepared foods in your refrigerator, freezer or pantry are still safe to eat. Developed by the United States Department of Agriculture, Cornell University and the Food Marketing Institute, the FoodKeeper app offers advice on food storage for more than 500 foods and beverages including baby food, dairy products and eggs, meat, poultry, produce and seafood. The app is available for Android and Apple devices on Google Play and itunes.
A calendar component allows you to enter the purchase date of various foods and beverages. You will receive notifications when products are nearing the end of their recommended storage date. You can also get tips for methods to cook meat, seafood and poultry.
In addition to preventing food borne illness, the app can help reduce the amount of food that is thrown away. You save money and there is less food heading to the landfill.
