Winter Garden

Theresa Badurek, Urban Horticulture Agent, UF/IFAS Extension

This is not a travel article about lovely Winter Garden, FL. No, this is about the delicious herbs and vegetables that you can grow here in Florida during the winter. We are fortunate in that we can grow pretty much year-round here. The trick is in the timing. If you are from up north you can forget your tried and true garden calendar- we do things differently here.

Here’s a handy chart that lists what you can plant right now:

Edibles-JANUARY

Keep in mind that if you directly plant seeds in the garden this time of year your tender new shoots may not survive if we experience frost or freeze, so you may need to provide cold protection for your winter garden during those times. Even many mature plants won’t tolerate a frost or freeze, so always keep an eye on the forecast.
