Landscapers Etiquette

As Landscapers the job is to work around clients while making them happy about the aesthetics of their landscaping. Doing so may seem like an easy; get in and get out type of job, but there are a few basic things you should consider when you get to a property to preform the job.

Basic etiquette or good manners can help improve how the company is perceived by the client. Let’s outline some unspoken rules and why they should be followed not only for your safety but piece of mind for the client who is paying for the services.

  1. Watch starts times during the weekends; starting too early could be an issue for some residential clients. From babies to working from home. Just because you are up and ready at 7am on a Saturday doesn’t mean your client would like to be as well.
  2. Know your mowing heights for the species of grass you will mow. Damage by scalping can be detrimental to lawns making them appear yellow and brown; this will open the turf to other issues that will be costly to repair.
  3. ALWAYS blow clippings back into the landscape. Never blow clippings on impervious surfaces or down the drain. This is how non-point source pollution begins.
  4. You are hired to save the client time, not money. Do not rush through the job or cut corners.
  5. Follow all OSHA guidelines and regulations, they are in place to keep you safe.
  6. Always wear PPE- personal protective equipment. It will keep you safe from harm.
  7. Take the time to certify yourself and your workers. Certain certificates prove to clients that you hold yourself to a higher standard. Check out your local, UF/IFAS Extension office website for classes on different certifications you can obtain.
  8. Stay off mobile devices while active with machinery. Texting and driving a zero turn is dangerous, don’t do it.
  9. Create and stick to the IPM -Integrated pest management plan, for each property. This will help to mitigate any issues before they start being a problem. Keep records of this.
  10. If you must use the restroom, ask the client, or find a nearby restroom. Do not use the restroom outside on site, this is breaking the law and could lead to a felony.
  11. Keep a fire extinguisher in the truck. You never know when you may need one. Keep it on hand.
  12. Know your equipment. Calibrate it properly, keep it clean and well oiled. Be sure to do this at each site visit.
  13. Be courteous, take a moment to greet or speak to your client even if it’s simply letting them know what you will be preforming today. This adds a personal touch.
  14. Have patience. Listen to clearly understand to be helpful later.
