Palms are popular plants that represent a slice of Florida paradise! There is a science to growing pretty palms that will thrive in Florida, from wild places to managed spaces. By understanding the fundamentals of how palms grow and employing best management practices, palms can grow for generations!

Did you know that many palm problems start with selecting the wrong palm for the wrong place? Are you a skilled palm reader, telling the difference between a hangry palm and a diseased one?

Join UF/IFAS Orange County Horticulture Extension Agents Hannah Wooten and Dr. Heather Kalaman to learn more about the fundamentals of palms! In this 3-hour workshop, we will dig into a general overview of palms including significance, biology and morphology, stressors of palms, diagnostics, and how to best care for palms in the landscape.

Overview of palm significance, biology, and morphology.

9:40 am – 10:10 am: Palm Problems, Biotics 

Overview of major pests, diseases, diagnostics, and prevention in palms. 

10:10 am – 10:30 am: When, What, and How to Take Palm Diagnostic Samples

10:30 am – 10:45 am: Break!

10:45 am – 11:15 am: Palm Problems, Abiotics

Overview of physiological disorders, nutrient deficiencies, and other issues.  

11:15 am – 11:35 am: Palm Maintenance

Fertilizer regimen and pruning techniques. 

11:35 am – 11:55 am: Right Palm, Right Place

Florida-friendly palms: natives, fertilizer-friendly species, and the importance of pH in species selection. 

11:55 am – 12:00 noon: Post-test 

12:00 noon – 12:15 pm: Certificates and CEUs
