The variety of potential pests in Florida can make you want to give up on growing a vegetable garden. Our extended warm weather, humidity and rainfall are favorable to most garden insects and diseases.

I would be the first to admit that growing your own vegetables in our part of the country is challenging. There are “on years” and “off years” when growing a garden. Each year is different. You can’t measure success or failure in one attempt at growing a vegetable garden. There are too many variables. Some years the pest numbers will be greater than another year. Some years the weather will be more favorable for production as compared to another year. For example, I’ve experienced having a good crop of bell peppers one year and then not getting one bell pepper the very next year in the same garden, with the same pepper varieties, while using the same cultural practices.

I will cover some of the common garden pests as well as pest control options at the free two-hour What’s Wrong with My Vegetable Garden seminar. Some of the pest control options that I’ll share include planting pest resistant varieties, planting at the right time, using trap crops and watering correctly. We’ll look at environmentally friendly pest control products that work. This seminar is designed to help you determine and correct what’s wrong with your vegetable garden.
