DAVIE, Fla.—The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences will host the annual Aquatic Weed Control Short Course May 19-24 at UF’s Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center and the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Hotel (6650 North Andrews Avenue).
Vernon Vandiver, associate professor at UF’s Fort Lauderdale center, has organized the workshop since 1976 in Gainesville. In 1992, the workshop was moved to Fort Lauderdale.
“There are many advantages for those who attend the course, but one of the most important will be the ability of participants to acquire continuing education units (CEUs) or credits in aquatic weed control for licenses in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina,South Carolina and Tennessee,” Vandiver said. “Also, people can renew commercial, public and/or private pesticide applicator licenses.”
The short course will include presentations on herbicide equipment calibration and herbicide application techniques from experienced trainers. Participants can learn how to optimize weed management programs by studying herbicide characteristics, culture aquatic plants, manage and control weeds in planted wetland sites, maximize herbicide efficacy and minimize man-hours for reduced costs, and identify aquatic plants and weeds.
The highlight of the short course will be Wednesday May 22 when participants visit the UF research and education center in Davie to gain “hands-on” experience in aquatic weed management, said David Sutton, professor at the center.
Vandiver said about 500 people are expected to register for the short course. The registration cost is $245. For more information, visit http://conference.ifas.ufl.edu/aw/ or call UF’s Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center at: (954) 577-6316.
