What: Florida 4-H will host its annual tailgating grilling competition, which is the state championship event after a series of regional qualifying competitions.
Where: UF/IFAS Beef Teaching Unit South, 3721 SW 23rd St., Gainesville.
When: Saturday, Oct. 4, 9 a.m.
About: Florida 4-H youth from across the state will compete Saturday to be the best tailgate grill master, ahead of this weekend’s Florida Gators football game against the University of Texas Longhorns. Youth who’ve won their regional tailgating competitions will compete for college scholarships. The competition is sponsored by Publix.
The event, and educational classes leading up to it, teach hundreds of youth each year about meat science, grilling and food safety, all to develop key life skills such as food preparation and connecting youth to important career pathways.
The competition lasts about two hours, with awards and scholarships announced following lunch.
