Happy World Penguin Day!

By Tom Nordlie

Here’s wishing everyone a wonderful World Penguin Day from the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences! This image, taken by microbiologist Brent Christner during an Antarctic research trip in 2001, depicts an emperor penguin on the Antarctic coast, about 25 miles from McMurdo Station, the facility where scientific teams arrive and depart from the continent. Now an associate professor with the UF/IFAS microbiology and cell science department, Christner returned to Antarctica in December 2018 with one of his doctoral students from the UF/IFAS College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, to help explore a freshwater lake that lies nearly one mile beneath the ice sheets that overlie Antarctica’s land mass.
