GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Ron Labisky, an emeritus professor in the University of Florida’s wildlife ecology and conservation department, has been named a Fellow in The Wildlife Society for his outstanding service to the profession. He will be honored September 27 at the society’s annual conference in Madison, Wis.

He joined the faculty of UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences in 1976, serving as acting director of the School of Forest Resources and Conservation until 1978, coordinator of the school’s wildlife program from 1979 to 1983, and acting chair of the wildlife ecology and conservation department from 1984 to 1987. He retired from UF in June 2003.

“During his UF career, Labisky has been active in professional organizations, including The Wildlife Society and the American Fisheries Society,” said Nat Frazer, chairman of the UF/IFAS wildlife ecology and conservation department. “In 1978, he co-founded the National Association of University Fish and Wildlife Program Administrators.”

In 1981, his efforts gave the academic wildlife community a voice in the National Association of State Universities and Land- Grant Colleges (NASULGC). In 1995, NASULGC recognized him for “exceptional service” to the natural resources community, Frazer said.

He has published more than 150 scientific papers in wildlife ecology and marine fisheries.

Born and raised on a South Dakota ranch, Labisky earned his bachelor’s degree in wildlife conservation at South Dakota State University in 1955. He completed his master’s and doctoral degrees in wildlife ecology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In 1956, he joined the Illinois Natural History Survey in Champaign-Urbana where he served as a research scientist for 20 years. During this period, he also served as visiting professor at Ohio State University.
