GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A prominent hydrologist has been appointed chairwoman of the agricultural and biological engineering department in the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

Wendy Graham, a professor in the department, joined the UF faculty in 1989 after completing her doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She received her bachelor’s degree in engineering from UF in 1981.

“We’re confident she’ll build on the excellent leadership provided to the department by Direlle Baird during the past five years,” said Mike Martin, UF’s vice president for agriculture and natural resources. “The agricultural and biological engineering department will play a critical role in shaping the future of IFAS and, in turn, the university. We’re fortunate to have a person of Dr. Graham’s capability to chair this important unit.”

Graham is the first woman to chair an agricultural and biological engineering department at a U.S. university.

Her research focuses on developing computer models to predict the fate and transport of contaminants in hydrologic systems, evaluating impacts of agricultural production on surface and groundwater quality, and developing hydrologic indicators to determine ecosystem status.

Graham is the recipient of numerous honors, including the Editors’ Citation for Excellence in Reviewing for Water Resources Research from the American Geophysical Union; the Emerging Scholar Award from the American Association of University Women; the Young Engineer Award from the Florida Section of the American Association of Agricultural Engineering; the Gamma Sigma Delta Junior Faculty Award of Merit; the Sigma Xi Junior Faculty Research Award; and the University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship Award.

In addition, Graham is recognized for her leadership in the field of hydrology. She is a member of the board of directors for the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science and Florida’s Pesticide Review Council. She served as secretary of the American Geophysical Union’s hydrology section; associate editor of Water Resources Research, Advances in Water Resources and the Journal of Contaminant Hydrology; and chair of the Florida section of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers. She also was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ task committee on stochastic methods in subsurface contaminant hydrology.
