Before you go to the Grocery Store
- Make a list of the foods you need
- Have a full stomach
- Shop alone
At the store – Check prices (unit pricing) and read the Labels
Fruits and Vegetables
- If buying fresh – buy when in season; buy the whole item, not pre-cut/convenience
- If buying canned – store brands can be less expensive
- Look for low-sodium or no salt added
- Rinse the canned vegetable if it has sodium to reduce the sodium
- If buying frozen – store brands can be less expensive
Dairy
- Milk – choose 2% or 1%
- Yogurt – choose plain and flavor yourself with fruit; low-sugar
Grains
- If buying bread, you want whole grains – look for the word whole
- If buying cereal, you want whole grains and little added sugar
Proteins: Fish, Poultry, Meat, Legumes
- Buy when on sale and you can repackage and freeze for later use
- If buying poultry, a whole chicken may be less expensive than skinless, boneless chicken parts
- If buying beef or pork cuts, look for the words round and loin – they have less fat
- Check the frozen fish section
