Florida 4-H University, what in the world is that?

Do you belong to a family who for generations have been involved in 4-H, you may have heard your grandparents speak of 4-H Short course or 4-H Congress. These events have evolved over time and now it is called Florida 4-H University.

4-H University is a week-long event and takes place July 30-August 2, 2018, for youth aged 14-18 (4-H age), held on the University of Florida Campus in Gainesville, FL.

Florida 4-H’ers will experience an opportunity to participate in educational workshops led by University of Florida faculty, explore career opportunities, lead community service activities, interact with youth from all over the state, and have fun while developing critical life skills that will help them become productive and engaged citizens in their communities, their country and their world.

I attended 4-H Congress when I was a youth and have wonderful memories. Some of which are the friends I made, I loved the experience of staying in the dorms, I enjoyed the experience of leaving home to go to a place I had never been, being a part of an event with just youth in my age range, and being a part of a state wide 4-H event.

Is 4-H the only place you can have these experiences? No, but it was one of the best 4-H experiences I had. Not only am I grateful for the memories, but it also helped me choose my career path.

Some youth enjoy the competition of presenting demonstration or illustrated talks about their project work, or compete in public speaking, while others enjoy sharing their talent. If youth participate in their 4-H district competition and receive a blue ribbon, that qualifies them to compete at the state level. Some first-place state winners qualify to move on to National competition.

During 4-H University the 4-H State Council conducts business and holds their annual election and installation of officer’s ceremony. 4-H University is led by State Council officers. They plan the entire event including the theme, workshops, t-shirt design, and agenda. If this is something you would like to do, I encourage you to plan to attend this year and then seek the opportunity to serve on the Florida 4-H State Council.
