Would you eat a certain food if the food label told you how many minutes of a certain exercise it would take to expend those calories consumed? This is quite an innovative concept. The United Kingdom is actually considering placing an ‘activity equivalent’ on the food label to better help consumers to realize not just how many calories they are consuming, but what physical effort would be required to burn those calories.
With the National Institute of Health reports the United States adult obesity rate of 35.7%, and the World Health Organization reporting this week that almost 1 in every 11 people are affected by diabetes, this could be an effective new tool to help actually realize the impact of their food choices.
Only time will tell if this is part of the new food label of the future. But for today, realize that a 150-pound person walking a 24-minute mile (2.5 mph) burns about 200 calories.. That’s not on the food label!
