The dangers of old medications are there and must not be ignored. As some medications age, they can lose potency. Even worse, some can actually grow bacteria. “Once the expiration date has passed there is no guarantee that the medicine will be safe and effective,” says Ilisa Bernstein of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). “If your medicine has expired, do not use it.”
Proper disposal of old medications is important. The best option is at a local drop site. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) sponsors the DEA National Take-Back Day to help provide a safe and responsible option for disposing of old prescription medications.
This Saturday, October 22, 2016 is the day! Check out the DEA National Take-Back website to find a location near you.
