Medication Inserts and Your Health

How many of us really read the medication insert provided each time we have a prescription filled? With each prescription filled, an insert describing the medication, side effects, and so forth accompanies the medication, but did you realize that these inserts change as new research for the medication uses are discover and/or reported adverse side effects are reported? Well, thanks to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), these updates regarding medications are highlighted on the Medication Guides page of the FDA website. Even better, if you want to be alerted that there has been an update to a medication insert, you can sign up for email alerts.

Although I trust my physician to prescribe the best possible medication to meet my particular health needs, I still want to know what the medication is, does, best time/way take and the possible side effects. Yes, my pharmacist does provide counseling of dosage and other pertinent information, but I still like to know all of the ins and outs of what I am taking for my ailment or to manage a disease.

Being involved and proactive in your health and well-being is one of the best ways to help your physician to care for you. Read those medication inserts, ask your pharmacist or physician if you have questions. Being educated regarding any health issues you have and maintaining an open dialog with your physician is one of the best ways for you to manage your health issues for the best possible health outcome.
