Florida 4-H Public Speaking Program – Success!

Florida 4-H Public Speaking Program – Powered By FPL

Florida 4-H Public Speaking is one of the school enrichment programs that Florida 4-H offers. In Indian River County, this program begins in 4th and 5th grade classrooms, where teachers educate students on the importance of public speaking, how to write a speech, and how to deliver a speech successfully. Next, teachers schedule and host their classroom contest where the students present their speeches to their classmates. One winner from each classroom then advances to the school competition. The school’s 4th and 5th grade classes gather to watch their classmates compete at the school level! The classroom winners then present the same speech to their school and compete to win first place so they can advance to the county level competition. Each school’s 4th and 5th grade winners advance to the county competition. The Florida 4-H Public Speaking Program allows students to enhance their communication skills. This life skill is essential in many careers – it builds confidence and allows youth to feel a sense of belonging.

Indian River County 4-H Public Speaking County Contest

On Wednesday, May 11th, Indian River County 4-H held their county contest for the 4-H Public Speaking Program. Five elementary schools participated in the 4-H Public Speaking Program this year. The night started at 6 pm sharp; the room was filled with nervousness and excitement. I provided a short orientation to the participants on how to use the microphone and told them they would do a fantastic job and they did not have to be nervous. We began our contest with our 4th grade presenters. After the 4th grade presentations were over, Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Company provided the juice during intermission! Next, we started with our 5th grade presenters. All the presentations were outstanding and well written. We heard speeches on ‘Rollercoasters,’ ‘Nothingness,’ and even ’18th Century Europe Versus Today’. What a fun and successful night it was!
