Project Overview

The Books and Cooks program is a new initiative of UF/IFAS Extension focused on improving the literacy and nutrition security of Florida families with low income. The project is a collaboration with UF’s College of Education Lastinger Center New Worlds Reading Initiative (https://www.newworldsreading.com/fl/en/home.html), which is a free book and reading program that delivers books and resources to eligible Florida students K-5. The Books and Cooks program is responsible for:

 

(1)          recruiting and enrolling families into the New Worlds Reading Initiative

(2)          developing local partnerships through county-level steering committees to guide NWRI recruitment and educational delivery.

(3)          delivering the Books and Cooks educational curriculum to increase family literacy capacities and improve nutrition security status.

(4)          optimizing program quality and assessing the achievement of outcomes through formative and summative evaluation of the Books and Cooks Program.

The IFAS Urban Forestry Extension Coordinator will be instrumental in merging a wide array of urban forestry educational efforts in Florida. The coordinator will work closely with IFAS Extension faculty and specialists to promote county, regional, and state level urban forestry education with various partners. This position is closely aligned with the Florida Urban Forestry Council (FUFC) and the coordinator will promote and support a network of urban forestry partnerships between County, City, State and Federal agencies, community groups and private property owners.

 

The overall goal for this position is to improve knowledge translation and dissemination and in so doing, elevate UF’s stature by positively positioning UF/IFAS as a leader in urban forestry Extension and outreach, and expanding statewide and national recognition.

 

The coordinator reports to the co-Chairs of the Urban Forestry Extension Council and will work collaboratively with UFEC members, UF/IFAS Specialists, County faculty, outreach media, and various public- and private- sector urban forestry subject matter experts.
