Florida is the top producer of watermelon in the nation, with 150 commercial farmers. A collaboration between UF/IFAS and the Florida Watermelon Association (FWA) tasked UF/IFAS Communications (ICS) with creating a visual reference guide that growers could take out in the field to help them solve production problems like plant diseases, nutrient imbalances, and pests. The challenge was to make this piece stand out amongst other similar publications and the ICS graphic designer sought to make the overall feel shout “watermelon” with a glance. The solution was to use the identifying characteristics of watermelon, including the red and green colors and the seeds, to convey this message visually.
The watermelon theme worked so well on the cover that the idea was carried onto the section divider pages within the publication.
Best Practice Tip
Utilize the natural look and feel of the topic as design elements (colors, fonts, and art) throughout the design to give the finished product a cohesive look and convey what your readers can expect.
