UF/IFAS Extension agents are finding different ways to communicate up-to-date information with clientele and podcasts are becoming more and more popular. We received a request to create a podcast graphic that needed to visually convey commercial horticulture aimed at celebrating greenspaces throughout the Space Coast of Florida.
Goal of graphic: to emphasize Green (turf, palm trees, flowering plants) and Space (rockets, stars, planet, sun).
Problem: Podcast graphics need to emphasize what is most important about your podcast while remaining simple and look good at multiple sizes.
Solution: First step for this graphic was to choose an appropriate font. A single font would not going
convey nature and space so the task of finding two that worked well together began. The combination of the two chosen fit that bill.Nature-based fonts can be curvy and “scripty.” Space fonts tend to be modern and thin. Adjustments were made to the space font by thickening the lines match the width of the nature font. We then had to open up some “space” in key areas (P, A and E) of the space font to give that unique and spacey feel.
Choosing what elements to illustrate was a little more simple. Brevard county is a coastal community and with the recent Falcon 9 “Dragon” rocket launch. It seemed a perfect fit for the space scene in the graphic. All the other elements of turf, palm trees and flowering plants just fell into place.
Outcome: Even though the client didn’t express an exact idea as to what they were looking for when viewed for the first time the response was “Awesome! That’s exactly along the line that I was thinking and hoping for.”
