On Saturday, March 14, 2015, fourteen members of the Holmes County 4-H Dead Centers Archery Club accompanied by twenty-seven adults, traveled to Newberry, Florida to compete in the 2015 Florida 4-H State Archery Match. These youth worked hard to demonstrate their knowledge and abilities in the sport of archery due to the great instruction since September of 2014 from 4-H certified volunteers, Jim Forman and Ralph Bowdish.
This year, the Junior and Intermediate age groups were required to shoot 5-color face FITA targets with a total of 72 arrows at various distances appropriate for their age division. Of the fourteen members traveling to the competition, nine 4-Hers represented the Junior age category of 8-10: Layla Hodges, Roland Jackson, Noah Owens, Carson Sherrouse, Kaiya Owens and Isaac Boatwright (Instinctive Compound) and Chad Albury, Wes Cook and Racheal McCormick (Sighted Compound). Five 4-Hers represented the Intermediate age category of 11-13: Jack Middlebrooks (Sighted Recurve), Logan Chitty, Tyler Dunn, Hannah Faircloth and Seth Smith (Sighted Compound). These 4-Hers rose to the challenge and represented the county well in the shooting sports competition in the 4-H program.
After a long day of competition, the results were very impressive for Holmes County youth! The results were as follows:
In the Junior Age Instinctive Compound Division, Noah Owens, 1st place; Carson Sherrouse, 5th place; Layla Hodges, 6th place; and Isaac Boatwright, 7th place.
In the Junior Age Sighted Compound Division, Chad Albury, 4th place; Wes Cook, 7th place; and Racheal McCormick, 10th place.
1st Place Junior Team Award – Instinctive Compound Bow went to Layla Hodges, Roland Jackson, Carson Sherrouse, and Noah Owens.
In the Intermediate Age Sighted Compound Division, Seth Smith, 2nd place.
In the Intermediate Age Sighted Recurve Division, Jack Middlebrooks, 4th place.
Along with the Holmes County 4-H Agent, Niki Crawson, certified 4-H Shooting Sports Volunteers, Jim Forman and Ralph Bowdish, have met with the 4-H members on a regular basis to reinforce shooting sports safety practices and increase skills in the field of archery precision. Crawson states, “We are very proud of all of our 4-H youth that attended the 4-H State Archery Match this year. They all did a fantastic job of demonstrating what they have learned in the sport of archery. We are thrilled that Holmes County 4-H had the opportunity to participate in this event. We thank all of the volunteers, parents, grandparents, and community leaders for their support of our archery program!”
