Every summer, Florida 4-H members travel to the state Capitol in Tallahassee to take part in something truly unique called 4-H Legislature. For one exciting week, they step into the roles of senators, representatives, lobbyists, and party leaders. They debate real issues, learn how government works, and grow as leaders.
But what’s it really like to experience 4-H Legislature? We asked participants to share their favorite moments and what they learned. Here’s what they had to say.
Favorite Moments: From the Senate Chambers to the Supreme Court
For many, walking through the Capitol and sitting where real lawmakers sit was unforgettable.
“It was so cool to see all the rooms where real senators and representatives do their work and to actually act it out ourselves!”
Another highlight was a visit to the Florida Supreme Court:
“My favorite part was going to the Supreme Court and acting out a case with my friends.”
Others were struck by the chance to be in spaces usually reserved for elected officials.
“It was fun and interesting. I couldn’t believe we got to sit in the same seats as Florida lawmakers!”
Taking on Real Roles in Government
At 4-H Legislature, youth choose a role and dive in: some become lobbyists, some serve as aides, and others take on party leadership.
“I was the Gold Party Leader in the Senate. I campaigned for our party, recruited new members, and helped push our bills through. We ended up being the majority party!”
“This year, I was a lobbyist. I had to speak up and persuade senators to support my bills. It really helped my public speaking skills.”
One delegate even served as the secretary’s aide during the mock session, helping run the legislative process from inside the Senate chamber.
Learning How Government Really Works
Throughout the week, participants learned more about how bills become laws—and how much teamwork and debate goes into the process.
“I learned a lot about parliamentary procedure and how different motions work in the Senate.”
“This week really opened my eyes to how our government works and how laws are passed.”
Growing as Leaders

Beyond learning about government, 4-H Legislature helps youth grow personally and as leaders.
“I definitely improved my leadership skills. Whether it was helping someone find their way around or working with others on a bill, it felt great to lead.”
“Lobbying helped me become a stronger speaker. I had to think on my feet and explain my ideas clearly.”
Inspiring Civic Engagement
For many, the experience made them realize how important it is to stay involved and informed.
“This experience made me care more about what’s going on in our state government. The laws they pass affect us more than we think.”
“I’m way more interested in government now. I understand it so much better after this week.”
A Moment to Remember
One thing that stood out to many was being in the actual Senate chambers.
“In past years, the chambers were under construction. This year we got to use them—and that made the experience even more special.”

Would You Recommend 4-H Legislature? Definitely.
“I’d absolutely recommend it! You learn so much, meet great people, and get to be in the state Capitol which is sick!”
“It might seem intimidating at first, but it’s such a valuable experience. Totally worth it.”
Final Thoughts: Discovering the Leader Within
4-H Legislature isn’t just about government—it’s about helping youth see themselves as leaders.
“It made me realize that while we have leaders now, one day it’ll be up to us to step into those roles.”
“This experience made me want to be more involved with 4-H and leadership in my county.”
For these young people, 4-H Legislature was more than a trip to Tallahassee. It was a hands-on lesson in leadership, citizenship, and the power of youth voice.
