Opportunity for Youth to Learn Essential Life Skills in 4H

Flagler County 4-H Provides Opportunity for Youth to Learn Essential Life Skills

School is in full swing and students are feeling the pressures of the spring semester. Likely, many are already peering with anticipation to Spring Break arriving in a little over a month. Thinking forward to next year may seem a bit aggressive, but knowing what is available may help narrow down options in the future. With a multitude of after-school activities available to youth, the question should be asked: why should youth join 4-H?

From humble beginnings as boys and girls agricultural clubs to the 222,000 youth enrolled today, 4-H has always worked to provide opportunities for youth to learn essential life skills. The mission of the UF/IFAS Extension 4-H Youth Development Program is to use a learn-by-doing approach to help youth gain the knowledge and skills they need to be responsible, productive citizens. This mission is accomplished by creating safe and inclusive learning environments involving caring adults and utilizing the expertise and resources of the University of Florida and the nationwide land grant university system.

Local clubs are the foundation of 4-H and are organized to provide positive, community based learning opportunities for youth during their developmental years. For more than 100 years, 4-H has been committed to the idea that youth are the single strongest catalyst for change. Florida 4-H offers an array of fun learning opportunities across many types of project areas across the state to build workforce readiness and life skills such as communication, record keeping, leadership, self-discipline, and teamwork.

UF/IFAS 4-H aspires to be the leading youth development program in Florida. Flagler County 4-H offers traditional agricultural, cooking and sewing, equine, and archery clubs. There are also many opportunities through school enrichment, summer camps, and any other 4-H project area that an adult volunteer would like to lead, from robotics to theater, and any topics in between.
