Before you grab the loppers and head outside to prune your crape myrtle, read through the UF publication ‘Crapemyrtle Pruning’. A more appropriate type of pruning for this tree is to selectively remove branches that are crossing, diseased, or growing out of bounds. Branches are either removed or reduced, rather than topped. Selective pruning also reduces the amount of debris that you have to throw away. Crape myrtles that receive rountine selective pruning develop into healthy specimens that offer interest for all seasons.
