Weed of the Month: Artillery Weed

In the battle for a beautiful lawn, one very common weed can take over if you let your guard down – artillery weed.  This annual weed gets its name from the fact that it forcefully ejects pollen grains from the small flowers it produces year round. A popular plant in rock gardens, artillery weed prefers moist well drained areas but can tolerate drought once it is established. Artillery weed can be a bit of a Trojan horse – always inspect potted plants you bring into the landscape for seedlings. It can grow in full sun but prefers shaded or indirect light. Pre-emergent herbicides are the best weapon to control it early on. Once established, you’ll need to add post emergence herbicides to your arsenal. For small areas, hand pulling will work if the whole plant is removed.
