Native to Europe, Chickweed (Stellaria media) can be found worldwide and is a winter annual weed in Florida landscapes. It can grow throughout the year, but really thrives in the fall and spring. Established across the state, it is more common in the north and central areas of Florida. Chickweed usually grows close to the ground but can grow upright if the conditions are right. Moist, shaded areas are its preferred habitat. As with all weeds, the best defense is a healthy lawn. Hand pulling will suffice if caught before the plant flowers. Germination to flowering happens quickly and plants produce a lot of seeds that are easily spread and can remain viable for decades. If a lawn is overrun, herbicides work well to control it.
