Weed of the Month: Dollarweed

Dollarweed is a very common perennial weed that also goes by the name pennywort.  As the name implies, it it about the size of a silver dollar. It also looks just like a mini lily pad – which is appropriate considering how much it likes water.  For dollarweed, it’s easy being green and it can spread quickly and does well in sun or shade. If you see it in your lawn, it’s probably being over watered or has taken up residence in an area of poor drainage. In some cases, leaking water or irrigation lines could also be the culprit. Handweeding can work in some cases, but it is very difficult to remove the rhizomes which is how it spreads. Ensure that the area is not being over-watered and if it is still an issue, systemic postemergence herbicides may be the best option.
