The weather is humid this rainy August afternoon and it’s time to determine whether or not to explore the new market wether show and sale, hosted by the Suwannee River Fair.
Market Wether Project – Before you decide if this new market project is for you. There are several questions you must answer before purchasing your project animal.
What are the rules? Checkout the mysrf.org website to learn your responsibility, weight limits, ownership dates, and entry deadlines.
What About Gain and Frame? You will need to learn how to evaluate frame size and growth to determine at what weight a goat will be correctly finished. On average and under normal conditions goats will gain approximately 2 pounds per week. For the 2018 Suwannee River Fair market wethers must weigh between 50 and 125 pounds. When selecting your project animal consider frame size, not all goats can be fed to the same final weight. A large frame goat could correctly finished at 140 pounds, while small frame animal might correctly finished at 50 pounds.
Are You Ready? At the time of purchase, you know what your goat weighs and how long it is until show time. With this information you can calculate if your wether will have to be fed light, moderate, or heavy to meet the final weight requirements of our Suwannee River Youth Livestock Show and Sale.
Remember Program management is the key to a successful market wether project.
