​​CALS Celebrates Outstanding Teachers and Advisors

Gainesville, Fla – The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) recognized exceptional faculty and staff for their accomplishments in teaching and advising during the annual CALS Awards Banquet on April 18. 

“The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences has some of the most talented and resourceful teachers and advisors at UF,” said CALS Dean Elaine Turner. “I am continually impressed with their commitment to excellence in teaching and advising, and to the service of our students.” 

This year’s recipients include:   

Early Career Excellence in Teaching 

The Early Career Excellence in Teaching Award is presented to new faculty members who have gone above and beyond implementing teaching methods in the classroom.  

  • Daniel Czyz, Microbiology and Cell Science 
  • Ana Martin-Ryals, Agricultural and Biological Engineering 

Undergraduate Advisors of the Year 

This award is presented to faculty and staff who have excelled in effective advising and mentoring of undergraduate students. 

  • Amie Imler, Animal Sciences 
  • Michael Sisk, Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences 

Amie Imler was also recognized as the university-level 2022-2023 Undergraduate Advisor of the Year. 

Undergraduate Teachers of the Year 

Recipients of this award have displayed a commitment to educating students through innovative and productive methods. 

  • Soohyoun Ahn – Food Science and Human Nutrition 
  • Xin Zhao – Horticultural Sciences 

Xin Zhao also received the university-level award for the 2022-2023 Undergraduate Teacher of the Year. 

Graduate Teachers/Advisors of the Year 

This award recognizes faculty and staff who have gone above and beyond to encourage, educate, and mentor graduate-level students. 

  • Larry Forthun – Family, Youth and Community Sciences 
  • Muthusami Kumaran – Family, Youth and Community Sciences 

Excellence in Graduate Program Support Award 

The Excellence in Graduate Program Support award is presented to a staff member who has successfully provided outstanding support to students throughout their time in the program. 

  • Jacqueline Lee – Microbiology and Cell Science
