The University of Florida honored College of Agricultural and Life Sciences alumnus Michael Joyner (BS ’86) with the Distinguished Alumnus Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the agriculture industry and his dedication to serving the university.
Throughout his notable career, Joyner has made a lasting impact on the lives of agriculturists, shaping policies and initiatives that have transformed the industry. His expertise has been sought by governmental officials, and his influence has led to the passage of groundbreaking legislative initiatives in environmental, energy, agricultural and trade sectors.
“Mike is renowned for many things, but his strategic visioning and ability to build consensus among groups of differing opinions make him one of the most widely respected individuals in the industry,” said CALS Dean Elaine Turner.
Today, Joyner serves as president of the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association, where he advocates for growers and shippers of vegetables, citrus, tropical fruit, berries and more. His impact extends far beyond legislation, as he has dedicated himself to improving the industry while developing and mentoring the next generation of leaders.
Since assuming leadership of the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association (FFVA), Joyner has played a pivotal role in developing the Emerging Leadership Development program. This innovative initiative is designed to build the leadership capacity of young professionals, equipping them with the skills and confidence to become influential leaders in their companies, communities and beyond.
“Mike’s recognition, development and stewardship of young leaders have had a lasting impact,” said Martha Rhodes Roberts, former Assistant and Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture for FDACS. “He is a consummate servant leader for the university, our state, and our nation, and his example and leadership continue to inspire and grow.”
Joyner previously served as Assistant Commissioner and Chief of Staff for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services under Commissioner Adam Putnam, where his exceptional leadership and calming presence in tense situations earned him widespread respect.
“In every instance, Mike reveals his own best character traits and brings out the best in others,” Putnam said. “He is a trusted voice when he offers his views, and he understands the unique role the University of Florida plays in navigating a changing industry in a rapidly changing state and world.”
Throughout his entire career, Joyner has remained connected to his alma mater through several volunteer roles, including serving on advisory councils for his home department, food and resource economics, as well as the UF/IFAS Advancement Council and UF Leadership and Education Foundation, Inc. He was also a member of the UF/IFAS Wedgworth Leadership Program for Agriculture and Natural Resources’ first class.
Turner praised Joyner’s commitment to the land-grant university and the agricultural industry, saying, “Mike and our college share a deep commitment to the importance of leadership and service, and his dedication to developing the next generation of leaders is truly admirable. We are proud to count him among our alumni and recognize him with this award.”
