Transfer Student Survival Guide

At a night football game, the lights of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium go black, and fans all around the stadium shine their flashlights to sing along to Tom Petty’s “Won’t Back Down.” The crowd’s energy is electric as the Gators score the winning touchdown. As students leave the stadium, the chant “It’s great to be a Florida Gator” reverberates off the walls. The moment is indescribable, and there is no place like The Swamp. But even outside of football or other athletic events, being a Gator student is an experience like no other.

As a student in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, your Gator journey will provide many experiences and memories, from Coffee and Careers with prospective employers to packaging meals at the CALS Day of Service. Transferring to a new college or university can be both exciting and nerve-racking, but our college is here to help you make the most of your time at the University of Florida. Here are some tips to help guide you for your start at the University of Florida.

1. Merge Career Goals with a Major of Study

CALS offers many different majors to prepare you for a career. Research all the majors CALS offers before deciding what you plan to study during your time at UF. The major quiz on the CALS website is a great resource to help you get started.

2. Find Your Place through Student Organizations and Clubs

CALS and UF have many opportunities to get involved and meet people. There are more than 45 student organizations affiliated with the college. Some transfer students have become CALS Ambassadors, organization leaders, or community volunteers, contributing to much of their growth in CALS and their journey at UF.

3. Create a Balance

As a transfer student, you may feel pressure to attend the numerous events happening all over campus, and it can be hard to manage coursework and social activities. A healthy balance is essential by having a routine, using tools such as a planner, and prioritizing self-care.

4. Embrace the UF and Gainesville Culture

The options are endless, from fall football games to lunch on the Plaza of the Americas. Explore different parts of UF and the city, like Lake Alice, by having a picnic or going to the bat houses around sunset. A must-do in Gator Nation is to see a show at the Phillips Center. From Tony award-winning musicals to Symphony Orchestra performances, this is something you do not want to miss.

5. Embrace the Support of your Community

Transitioning into a new academic environment can cause anxiety for many students. However, you are not alone in your journey at UF. You will find support in and outside the classroom through connections with faculty, staff, and peers. We encourage you to prioritize your overall well-being using resources within CALS and other areas, such as U Matter We Care and the Therapeutic Horticulture program.

6. Celebrate your Journey in The Swamp

You are going to experience challenges, especially in a new academic environment. These challenges may include learning to navigate campus or preparing for difficult exams. However, every win is a step forward in your journey at UF and beyond. Whether finding your community on campus or your dream internship—CALS wants to celebrate with you. Connect with us on social media and share your successes.
