The University of Florida’s agricultural and biological engineering graduate program remains in the Top 10 nationwide, according to the 2021 U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings that came out March 17.
The program ranked No. 8 overall. The agricultural and biological engineering department is part of the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS). Students can choose to earn their graduate degree in the UF/IFAS College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) or the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering.
“I believe our excellent faculty and a departmental culture that supports student learning and growth is what has helped us remain in the Top 10 graduate programs for agricultural and biological engineering,” said Kati Migliaccio, professor and chair of the UF/IFAS agricultural and biological engineering department. “In addition, our research expenditures for fiscal year 2019 increased by more than $1 million compared to the previous year. This increase was due to additional grants being awarded and thus funding research programs and graduate students in our department.”
The agricultural and biological engineering discipline addresses many global problems our society faces today, such as climate change, food production and scarcity, and water quality and quantity, among others. Areas of research in this department at UF include: biofuels/bioprocessing; biosensors; climate change and variability effects on biological systems and natural resources; decision-support systems in agricultural and managed ecosystems; modeling of biological, environmental and hydrologic systems; nanobiotechnology; packaging and postharvest engineering; sustainable bioproducts; sustainable food systems and supply chain management.
