Azalea Flowers are in full bloom this spring! With Spring Break in full effect in Panama City, what better time to go and enjoy a nature walk!
Just like the original Spanish Explorers, I’m always looking for hidden Florida treasure! It really isn’t hard to find if you know where to look. Almost as valuable as gold are the enticing outdoor places so close to home. State parks are islands of nature and tranquility nestled inside our busy world.
We are blessed to live in one of the most biodiverse places on earth. An amazing showcase of habitats and beauty are literally just around the corner. Many are located within a two-hour drive of Panama City.
Typical of many in Northwest Florida, some of my best vacations happen when my family and friends visit from out of state. I enjoy showing off our “home” and being tasked with the next big adventure. The reward are family memories that last a lifetime! I plan to share several of my favorite places and experiences with you in the coming months.
As Easter approaches, if you want to experience the radiance of spring in full bloom, then plan a quick hour trip to Eden Gardens State Park located in South Walton County. As this adventure begins you will enter the 163-acre park grounds by driving up to the Wesley House framed by stately oaks. The home was originally built in 1897 and later restored and maintained in its full grandeur by Lois Maxon, who donated her estate for all to enjoy in 1968. Home tours are available Thursday – Monday for a small additional fee to the gate entrance which currently is $4.00 per vehicle.
Next on the activity list is a stroll through the gardens that surround the old homestead. My favorite plants are the striking azaleas, camelias, roses, and other ornamentals that accent a variety of garden spots. There are several water features including fountains, which are home to koi and other aquatic life. Native pollinator and butterfly plants are also featured throughout the gardens.
Complete your day with a family picnic on the shady banks of Tucker Bayou. Eden Gardens is day use only, however nearby State Parks like Grayton Beach feature camping options. Learn more about Eden Gardens State Park by calling 850-267-830 or by visiting https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/eden-gardens-state-park .
The park also features amenities for rent which are available to anyone interested in hosting learning events or even weddings! These details and after hour options are available through the Friends of Eden Gardens, https://www.friendsofedengardens.com .
