Showy Milkwort

Asemeia violacea

Wild Showy milkwort (Asemeia violacea) occurs naturally in pinelands, prairies and open disturbed areas throughout Florida. Flowers are dark pink to pinkish-purple, blurred fence line backgroundDespite having “showy” in the name, it is an extremely small herbaceous wildflower found in pinelands, prairies, and open disturbed areas. Showy Milkwort is a summer-bloomer although in Southern Florida you may be able to find it year-round in the warmer conditions. This plant is primarily pollinated by bees.

Flowers are dark pink to purplish, with winglike sepals appearing below them. Leaf shape can vary but they are typically only an inch long and are arranged in an alternate fashion around the stem. The entire plant is typically less than 12 inches tall.
