University of Florida Gator Giving Day
The UF/IFAS Department of Agricultural Education and Communication (AEC) is proud to recognize the support of alumni and friends through the 1909 Society. This special group of donors makes recurring, tax-deductible annual gifts of $19.09 or more, directly supporting the next generation of agricultural communicators, educators, and leaders. Their generosity fuels opportunities like collaborative learning spaces, scholarship assistance, and research funding—investments that shape students’ futures.
One student who has reaped the benefits of the 1909 Society is Megan Edge, an undergraduate in AEC who has taken full advantage of the program’s offerings. From conducting undergraduate research to presenting at national conferences, Megan exemplifies the type of student the 1909 Society aims to support.
Finding a Home in AEC
Megan’s journey to AEC was not a direct one. Initially starting at UF with a different major, she soon realized something was missing. While excelling academically, her true passion emerged when she took on a PR director role for a pre-med club. Designing communications plans, branding guides, and merchandise sparked an interest that led her to explore AEC.
“A friend encouraged me to look into Agricultural Education and Communication,” Megan shared. “After exploring the program’s courses, internships, and strong alumni network, I knew it was the perfect fit. I’ve always loved design, marketing, and social media, and AEC has allowed me to turn those passions into a career that will make a real impact.”
Hands-On Learning and Research
Megan credits her coursework and research experiences for shaping her career readiness. One of her most impactful projects took place in Digital Media Production in Agriculture and Natural Resources (AEC 4031), where she developed a short-form video campaign promoting student involvement in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
Additionally, she collaborated with Jarred Shellhouse and Dr. Lauri Baker on her first research project, which strengthened her writing and analytical skills. “This project fueled my interest in research and inspired me to continue learning more,” Megan noted. “Through my coursework, I’ve gained experience in public speaking, writing for different audiences, and using digital media tools, all of which will be valuable in my career.”
Gaining Industry Exposure
One of Megan’s standout experiences was attending the National Agricultural Communications Symposium (NACS) in Irving, TX this February. Thanks to financial support from the 1909 Society, she was able to present her research to a national audience of agricultural communication professionals and scholars.
“I had an amazing experience at this conference and got to connect with so many other agricultural communicators,” she said. “The discussions and feedback I received not only helped refine my work but also gave me ideas for future research.”
The Importance of Alumni Support
Megan understands firsthand the impact of alumni contributions through the 1909 Society. “Many AEC undergraduate students, including myself, benefit from alumni support that allows us to attend conferences, conduct research, and participate in experiential learning opportunities,” she said. “Alumni support helps the department grow and adapt to industry changes, ensuring that current and future students receive a top-tier education.”
By joining the 1909 Society, AEC alumni and friends play a crucial role in strengthening the program and providing students like Megan with opportunities to excel. Your gift helps foster a dynamic learning environment, equipping the next generation of agricultural communicators with the skills and experiences they need to succeed.
