View Photo

In this photo released from the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Florida State Rep. Larry Cretul (left) and UF professor of microbiology Lonnie Ingram (right) discuss the future of the Sunshine State’s energy demands at the biofuels pilot plant on UF’s main campus in Gainesville – Monday, January 28, 2008.

The small-scale experimental plant will allow Ingram to improve upon his method for turning biomass, such as crop residue and yard waste, into cellulosic ethanol. The clean-burning fuel could someday replace a third of the United States’ imported oil and become a lucrative export product for Florida.
