GAINESVILLE—Trying to work your way through buying or constructing a new home?

The St. Johns River Water Management District, the Gainesville Builders Association, the Florida Efficient Windows Initiative and the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences have teamed up to offer a seminar on October 10 designed to help consumers make smart, energy-efficient decisions when buying or building new homes in Gainesville.

First, see how a house is built from a bare site to slab to framing to closing. Then, let experts from the University of Florida Energy Extension Service and the St. Johns River Water Management District show why efficient homes cost less to own and operate. Finally, a mortgage lender will demystify loan types, down payments and closing costs and tell why lenders are willing to offer incentives like better rates, better financing or cash back at closing.

Each participant will receive a free copy of “The Florida Home Buyer’s Guide to Energy and Water Savings” produced by the Florida Energy Extension Service.

This 3-hour seminar is free, but advance registration is required because seating is limited. The seminar is scheduled on Tuesday, October 10 from 6 pm to 9 pm at the Alachua County Extension Service at 2800 NE 39th Avenue, next to the fairgrounds. For registration information and directions, call the Gainesville Builders Association at 352-372-5649, M-F from 8 am to 4:30 pm.
