Jackson County Extension is hosting four regional, agricultural educational events over the next several weeks.

Watermelon & Cucurbit – February 11

The Tri-state Watermelon & Cucurbit Meeting will be held on Monday, February 11th at the Jackson County Agriculture Conference Center, located at 2741 Pennsylvania Avenue in Marianna, Florida. The program is scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM Central, includes lunch, and will conclude at 4:30 PM. This is a sponsored program with no registration fee, but participants are asked to pre-register by calling 850-482-9620.

Topics to be presented include: disease control, fertilization, pesticide handling & application, food safety, insect management, and variety selection for watermelon and other cucurbit crops. Attendees will be eligible to earn CEU’s to go toward restricted use pesticide license renewal.

Northwest Florida beef Conference- 2/21/13

Beef Cattle – February 21

The Northwest Florida Beef Conference & Trade Show will be held on Thursday, February 21st at the Jackson County Agriculture Conference Center, located at 2741 Pennsylvania Avenue in Marianna, Florida. The program is scheduled to begin at 7:30 AM Central and will conclude with lunch, followed by an optional Cool Season Forage Tour at the North Florida Research and Education Center. There is a $5 per person registration fee for this event, payable at the door. Participants are asked to pre-register by calling 850-482-9620

The focus of the 2013 edition of the Beef Conference will be Keeping Beef Herds Sustainable. Topics to be presented include: cattle market & input cost outlook; feed, pasture,and reproduction management; and a rancher panel. There will also be a trade show with exhibits by industry representatives that provide products and services for beef cattle ranchers.

Horse – March 2

The Panhandle Horse Expo will be held on Saturday, March 2nd at the Jackson County Ag Center, located at 3691 Highway 90 west, Marianna, Florida. The program will begin at 9:00 AM Central, include a hamburger lunch, and will conclude at 3:00 PM. There is a $5 per person registration fee for this event, and participants are asked to pre-register online through Eventbrite at http://www.eventbrite.com/event/5384280528.

This event will feature presentations on horse health, weeds & poisonous plants, and pasture management. There will also be demonstrations of dental & hoof care, and horse training. In addition, there will be a trade show with exhibits by industry representatives that provide products and services for horse owners.

Peanut & Cotton – March 7

The Panhandle Row Crop Short Course will be held on Thursday, March 7th at the Jackson County Agriculture Conference Center, located at 2741 Pennsylvania Avenue in Marianna, Florida. The program is scheduled to begin at 7:15 AM Central and will conclude with a sponsored lunch. This is a sponsored program with no registration fee, but participants are asked to pre-register by calling 850-482-9620.

Topics for this event will focus on peanut and cotton production, and will include: variety selection; weed, disease, and nematode management; irrigation efficiency, and pesticide application. There will also be updates provided by the Florida Peanut Producers and Florida Wildlife Commission on topics of interest to row crop farmers. In addition, there will be a trade show with exhibits by industry representatives that provide products and services for row crop farmers. Attendees will be eligible to earn CEU’s to go toward restricted use pesticide license renewal.
