Why Businesses Go Green

Why would a business decide to go green? We would like to assume most businesses implement environmental programs because it’s the right thing to do. However, research shows us three main drivers assist businesses with implementing green and sustainable business choices. There are social influences, political reasons, and general functionality playing a role in a decision to implement environmental programs within an organization.

Three main influences:

Social: pressure from stakeholders.

  • Managing expectations
    • Varies among regions of the country
    • Stakeholder expectations
    • Social movements
  • High visibility and influence on the community
    • Brand identity

Political: laws and policies that businesses are required implement.

  • Government policies
  • Government mandates
  • City ordinances
    • Styrofoam
    • Bans on plastic bags or straws

Functional: it just makes good business sense, and saves money.

  • Organizational efficiency
    • Financial benefits
    • Example: recycling program
  • Competing organizations
    • Within the league
    • Within the same city
