Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM)
EPM is a neurological disease caused by parasitic protozoans that cross the blood brain barrier and infect the nervous system. This disease has hit close to home several times in the past year and in an effort to create some additional awareness to assist horse owners with the management of their horse’s health, this month’s Horse Herald highlights what EPM is, which horses are at risk, what the symptoms are to look for, diagnosis and treatment, and some management practices to decrease the risk of EPM becoming an issue in their barns.
As with all health related issues, if you think you may have an issue with EPM, call your veterinarian.
