Collaboration between 4-H Youth Development and City of Jacksonville’s Parks and Recreation

The collaboration between the UF/IFAS Extension 4-H Youth Development Program and the City of Jacksonville’s Parks and Recreation Division is making a tangible difference in the lives of underserved youth in Duval County.

The dedication of individuals like Meredith Smith, the 4-H Program Assistant and Ms. Jackson, the Community Activities Coordinator at the Joe James Community Center are addressing critical needs, support and kindness to youth that attend this center.

These combined entities working together offers an enriching STEM experience within the familiar setting of their community center. These initiatives are not only fostering a love for learning but also empowering these youngsters to explore new possibilities and pursue their passions.

Ms. Jackson is a big proponent of the “educational, interactive, and fun engagement” offered by the 4-H Youth Development team! She explained, “That’s how I would describe 4-H if I was asked to put it into words. Ms. Jackson also said, “4-H has provided an integrated learning technique that captures and holds the children’s attention. No matter what age or learning style they may have, at the end of each lesson the children are able to share with you what they’ve learned.”

Meredith’s bi-weekly visits to the Joe James Community Center have earned her the endearing nickname “the 4-H Lady” among the excited children eagerly awaiting her arrival. Not only does Meredith bring light to this community but the center staff play an integral role in the lives of the children they serve, providing support and guidance beyond the classroom.

As the saying goes, it takes a village. In this case, it takes the County!
