This is National Invasive Species Awareness Week, which was established to raise awareness about invasive plants and animals and the damage they cause to the environment, our economy, and in some cases threats they pose to public health. There are many sources of information about invasive species but for a more comprehensive learning opportunity about invasive species in Florida, consider enrolling in a Florida Master Naturalist Program (FMNP) course.
The FMNP (www.MasterNaturalist.org) is an adult-only educational program that is appropriate for professional development and obtaining continuing education credits or for personal interest for individuals wishing to learn more about Florida’s environment and conservation issues. All three core FMNP courses – Coastal Systems, Freshwater Systems, and Upland Systems – discuss invasive species ranging from plants to every taxonomic animal group. However, for a more thorough discussion of invasive aquatic and terrestrial plants, we offer the FMNP Invasive Plants of Florida course. This is a 24-contact-hour course that, like all FMNP courses, includes both classroom and fieldtrip learning components. Whether you are a concerned citizen, resource manager, or educator the information provided in the FMNP Invasive Plants course will provide you with valuable knowledge about aquatic and terrestrial invasive plants, the species of greatest concern, the threats they pose to native biodiversity and ecosystem function, and information to share with others to help stop the spread of invasive plants in Florida’s natural areas.
FMNP courses are offered throughout the state by certified FMNP instructors. Course offerings may be 100% in-person, 100% online with self-directed field assignments, or as hybrid course with online lectures and in-person fieldtrips.
