Requirements to become a Master Gardener:
- Complete a Master Gardener Application (coming soon)
- Pay a Fee
- Complete a background check
- Complete 50 hours training (includes classroom and demonstration garden as well as 4 continuing education classes)
- Complete 75 volunteer hours within the first year of certification through your local county Extension office
Would you like to learn more about landscaping and gardening in our area? The Florida Master Gardener Volunteer Program offered by University of Florida/Wakulla County Extension offers basic gardening and landscape skills for homeowners.
Classes are held each Thursday, Jan. through May 2017.
Additionally, every third Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in the summer and 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. in the winter, Feb. through November, is a work/demonstration day at the Extension office. Students will have the opportunity to test and apply the techniques and skill developed in class.
Topics covered in class will include: soils sampling, proper fertilizer selection and use, right plant in the right place, efficient water use, weeds and herbicides, good bugs/bad bugs, vegetable gardening and much more.
Master Gardeners can fulfill their volunteer hours in a variety of ways, including: answering horticultural questions, participating in community and school garden projects, giving educational programs to the public, supporting youth activities, and more.
After the first year, you are required to complete 35 volunteer hours and 10 continued education hours yearly in order to re-certify.
Ability to use a computer and access to email is desired but not required.
