The Facts on Fats

Do dietary fats lead to weight gain? Are seed oils unhealthy? Understanding the role of fats in our diet is essential to making informed choices about nutrition.

KEY MESSAGES

Despite misconceptions, fats do not inherently lead to weight gain. In fact, they promote satiety and provide essential nutrients. Unsaturated fats, in particular, support heart health and lower cardiovascular risk.

Fat is crucial for energy, cell function, hormone production, and nutrient absorption (vitamins A, D, E, and K). It also enhances the texture and flavor of foods.

Types of Dietary Fats

  1. Unsaturated Fats (Healthy Fats): Found in olive oil, avocados, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish, these support heart and brain health.
    • Monounsaturated Fats: Help lower bad cholesterol and improve heart health.
    • Polyunsaturated Fats: Provide essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for brain function and reduced inflammation.
  2. Saturated Fats: Present in red meat, butter, and full-fat dairy. While not inherently harmful, excessive intake can raise bad cholesterol levels, increasing heart disease risk.
  3. Trans Fats: Found in processed and fried foods, these raise bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol, making them harmful. The FDA has restricted their use, but reading labels is still key.

Benefits of Healthy Fats

  • Heart Health: Lowers bad cholesterol and reduces heart disease risk.
  • Brain Function: Omega-3s support memory, cognition, and mental well-being.
  • Hormone Balance: Supports metabolism and reproductive health.
  • Skin & Hair Health: Keeps skin hydrated and hair strong.
  • Weight Management: Helps control hunger and prevent overeating.Sliced avocado

How to Incorporate Healthy Fats

  • Use olive or avocado oil instead of butter.
  • Snack on nuts, seeds, or hummus.
  • Add avocado to meals.
  • Eat fatty fish like salmon or mackerel.
  • Check food labels to avoid trans fats.

By prioritizing unsaturated fats and limiting unhealthy fats, we can improve overall health and well-being.
