The World Ocean Day 2026 theme is “Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet.” It renews the call for global action to protect ocean ecosystems. The international goal is to conserve at least 30% of the world’s lands, waters, and oceans by 2030. While marine protected areas (MPAs) are often associated with designated conservation zones, their success depends on a much wider area. Effective ocean protection requires scientific research, habitat restoration, community engagement, and long-term stewardship.
The UF/IFAS Department of Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences (SWES) contributes to these efforts through research and extension programs that support healthy coastal and marine ecosystems. From seagrass conservation and marine debris removal to oyster reef construction and estuarine restoration, SWES faculty are helping advance the goals of this year’s World Ocean Day theme.
The Value of Coastal Ecosystems
Healthy marine ecosystems provide habitat for wildlife, support fisheries, improve water quality, store carbon, and help coastal communities adapt to environmental change. Understanding how these ecosystems function is essential for protecting them. Research that Drs. Ashley Smyth and Laura Reynolds conducted highlights the importance of seagrass meadows as valuable coastal habitat. A 2023 study shows long-term seagrass meadow stability and species composition significantly influenced carbon stored in coastal sediments. Historically stable and diverse meadows contained some of the largest carbon reserves, demonstrating their important role in climate mitigation.
Often referred to as “blue carbon” habitats, seagrass meadows do more than capture and store carbon. They provide nursery habitat for fish and invertebrates, improve water quality, and stabilize sediments. Because of this, seagrass ecosystems are typically within MPAs and are a key focus of conservation and restoration efforts. The research helps resource managers better understand the ecological value of seagrass habitats for building resilience under environmental changes.
Community Stewardship

Scientific research is only one piece of successful conservation. Protecting marine ecosystems also requires public participation and engagement. Dr. Laura Reynolds and colleagues at the UF/IFAS Nature Coast Biological Station organize Operation TRAP (Trash Reduction for Aquatic Preserves). The volunteer-driven initiative removes marine debris from Florida’s coastal waters. This includes lost and abandoned fishing gear such as discarded traps and fishing line and lures. Marine debris can damage seagrass beds, entangle wildlife, and degrade sensitive habitats.
Through Operation TRAP, volunteers work alongside researchers to remove, weigh, and catalog debris while learning about the importance of healthy coastal ecosystems. The program not only reduces environmental impacts but also involves community members to become active stewards of Florida’s marine resources. This combination of science, education, and hands-on conservation reflects an important principle of World Ocean Day: lasting protection depends on both scientific knowledge and public engagement.
Building Living Shorelines and Oyster Reefs
Restoration is another essential tool for protecting marine ecosystems. Dr. Mark Clark’s work on living shorelines and oyster reef restoration demonstrates how nature-based solutions can strengthen coastal resilience while supporting biodiversity. Living shorelines use natural materials and habitat-forming species, such as oysters and marsh vegetation, to stabilize shorelines while maintaining ecological functions.
Recently, Clark collaborated with UF/IFAS and Florida Sea Grant partners to develop an open-source manual for constructing environmentally friendly reef prisms and panels used in oyster restoration projects. Designed to be built using readily available materials, these structures can be assembled by volunteer groups and incorporated into shoreline restoration efforts.
Oyster reefs provide numerous ecosystem services. They create habitat for marine organisms, improve water quality through filtration, and help reduce shoreline erosion by dampening wave energy. By combining research, extension, and community participation, these projects offer practical approaches for restoring coastal habitats.
Restoring Coastal Ecosystems

Protecting marine ecosystems also means rebuilding existing degraded habitats. Dr. Todd Osborne and colleagues at the UF Whitney Laboratory are leading large-scale restoration efforts in Florida’s Indian River Lagoon. It is one of the most biologically diverse estuaries in North America. The project focuses on restoring populations of hard clams, which help improve water quality through filtration. State agencies, nonprofits, and industry are supporting the work.
Since 2022, restoration partners have produced millions of clams for reintroduction into the lagoon. The effort supports multiple research projects examining population enhancement, ecosystem recovery, and the ecological benefits provided by shellfish restoration.
An interesting aspect of the project is its emphasis on co-restoration. Team members are pairing clam restoration with seagrass restoration to accelerate ecosystem recovery. As clam populations filter water and improve clarity, conditions become more favorable for seagrass growth. This integrated approach recognizes that coastal ecosystems are interconnected. Restoring multiple habitat types simultaneously can help rebuild ecological functions more effectively than addressing them separately.
Protecting the Ocean Starts Upstream
From Land to Ocean
While World Ocean Day focuses on marine ecosystems, what happens on land impacts the health of oceans and estuaries. Across SWES, faculty members conduct research and extension programs focused on water quality, watershed management, hydrology, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem restoration. Their work helps communities understand how water moves through landscapes and how land-use decisions influence downstream rivers, estuaries, and coastal habitats.
The World Ocean Day 2026 theme emphasizes that protecting our blue planet requires collective action, strong science, and long-term commitment. The work in SWES shows those goals are achieved through research, restoration, education, and community engagement to create healthier and more resilient coastal ecosystems. Together, these efforts support a broader vision of thriving marine habitats, sustainable communities, and healthy oceans that benefit people and wildlife alike.
